Civilians Employed by Missouri State Militia
At Springfield, Missouri Hospitals

By the summer of 1862, there were four General Hospitals in Springfield, Missouri. Though difficult to determine exactly which one of the civilians named below served in which hospital, it would appear from hospital records on file that they were part of the staff of what was known as the Berry Hospital. The Berry Mansion, located along Berry Spring, just Northeast of the City Square, was the former residence of Mayor Daniel Dorsey Berry, then serving in the Confederate Army. The mansion had been seized by Federal authorities for use as a hospital and an additional barracks with 200 beds was built on the grounds. The records indicate that members of the Missouri State Militia were kept at this hospital, unless they had contagious diseases. Those men who has Small Pox or various fevers were isolated in the Red Top Hospital to the southeast of Springfield Square. The people listed were in the employ of the Missouri State Militia and were administered by the 14th Missouri State Militia Cavalry.
