KNOWN ROSTER ERRORS

As transcription's proceeded, it became more then evident that many errors were made from the original roster records of the 5th Tennessee Regiment as well as most other regiments who served the Confederacy throughout the Civil War. Additionally, if I have missed your ancestor and not gotten him on the roster transcriptions. "PLEASE" contact me immediately so I may correct this by adding his name, rank and company on the rosters.  Please provide "SOME" type of documentation providing proof of his enlistment in the 5th Tennessee Regiment Infantry.

Most of the errors will be seen in the spelling of the last name, especially.  Here are a couple examples of "Last Name" spellings found within these rosters.  Note that the spellings below actually indicate that there are only two persons, not four.  The difference in the spelling is in the last name where the letter "Z" and "S" are substituted for one another.  However, I have to list both spellings as I have no idea which spelling is correct.  Hopefully, a descendant of this family name will contact me with "PROOF" of the family name as contained in some type of Civil War, military record as well as others who find similar type's of errors.

1) Brisendine, R.A., 3rd Lt., Co. "D"  and   Brizendine, R.A., 3rd Lt., Co. "D"

2) Brizendine, Thomas J., Pvt., Co. "D"  and   Brisendine, T.J., Pvt., Co. "D"

Another type of error is found in the original transcriptions concerning which "Company" the soldier fought in.  It has also become evident that transcribing from hand written documents lends itself to errors due to the original roster keepers style of writing.  When looking at the number of men in "L Company", if becomes evident that the record keeper probably made his "L's" much like a "C" as Company C seems to have an over abundance of men listed or credited to its muster rolls.  Additional errors could occur between similar letters when had written, like B and D or E and F or C and G.

Therefore, I would encourage the possible descendant of anyone listed on the transcribed roster records to contact the Tennessee State Archives or National Archives with a request to locate and receive any military, roster and/or pension records of your ancestor.  In this way, if the records are found, you will not have any question of your ancestors name spelling or which company he served in.  These documents often contain what officer who swore him into active duty, who he served under, dates and places of enlistment and discharge.  On pension papers, you will find information like skin complexion, hair color, eye color, height, marriage to whom by name, place of marriage, name and ages of children, place of residence, former marriage and to whom, officers served under, disability - if any, names and/or places of hospital, name and/or place of prisoner of war camp, living conditions in their unit's camp or even what they went through as a prisoner.  Pension papers often contain affidavits of the soldier describing in some cases, in great detail the conditions surrounding his dissibility.

I hope you will enjoy my site and information contained herein.
