Preamble

To date, few official transcript of the 5th Tennessee Regiment, Infantry history exists to my knowledge. In the following transcription’s of the 5th Tennessee Regiment, Infantry scouting, skirmishes and battles, you will be able to read are “actual correspondences” of the generals who interacted with and commanding officers of the 5th Tennessee Regiment, Infantry. Transcription’s have been made from the 128 volume set of the, "Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies," originally published under the U. S. War Department, Government Printing Office, 1880-1901. An additional regimental history was transcribed from "Tennesseans in the Civil War", two volume set. (ALL TRANSCRIPTIONS VERBATIM)

The 5th Tennessee Regiment, Infantry was organized for State service May 20, 1861 at Paris, Henry County, Tennessee, in the Provisional Army of Tennessee, and moved to Camp Brown, Union City, Obion County. There were originally twelve companies which were consolidated into ten when the regiment was reorganized, with many changes in company letters. In addition to these companies, Captain John W. Harris' Company "C", 46th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, the bulk of whose regiment was captured at Island Number Ten on April 8, 1862, served with this regiment as 2nd Co. "L" from this date until the fall of 1862. However, the rolls of this company are filed with the 46th Tennessee Infantry.

Some transcriptions from the "Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies" set have been added that do not include information about or from the 5th Tennessee Regiment, Infantry, but support battle information. These are transcriptions of correspondences of the particular battles being covered in order to provide the reader with a decent understanding of what actually occurred at that battle. If the additional transcription’s were not added, the reader would not be able to understand what really happened here from just the transcription’s of and about the 5th Tennessee Regiment, Infantry by themselves. Additionally, if “ALL” correspondences concerning the battles had been transcribed that “DID NOT” involve the 5th Tennessee Regiment, Infantry directly or indirectly, the reader would loose track of the 5th completely as the correspondences are extensively large in volume. Remember, I am trying to cover the movements of the 5th Tennessee Regiment, Infantry, not the battles of the Civil War.

In time, it is my hopes to be able to complete an accurate regimental history of all movements and placement of all companies with accurate dates, places of deployment and under which commanding officer.

I hope you will enjoy my site and information contained herein.
