Private Levi Newton Scott, Company "H"

Levi N. & Mary Catherine Scott with daughter, Cora Elizabeth Scott.

Private Levi Newton Scott was born to Anthony Tittle Scott and Lucinda (Barnes) Scott on March 20, 1842 in Wayne County, Tennessee. As a young man, Levi had moved to Dallas County, Missouri.

On June 24th, 1861, Levi enlisted as a Private in the Dallas County, Mo. Home Guard Volunteers, Company "G" under the command of Captain Joseph C. Eldridge's Cavalry. He was subsequently discharged from the Home Guard on September 24th, 1861 to get his personal affairs in order before entering into regular military service. On April 7, 1862, Levi entered the service of the 14th Missouri State Militia Cavalry, Company "H" at Springfield, Missouri under the command of Milton Burch.

Just one month later, Levi would marry his first wife, Eliza Ann Box, in May of 1862. To this union, three children were born, all in Dallas County, Missouri: Sarah Alice - born May 12, 1863, Malissa Ann "LUCY" - born January 6, 1865 and Henry Tomas - born November 6, 1866.

In the following month, on June 30, 1862, Levi was sent to Nicholas Hubbard's blacksmith's shop, just three miles from Buffalo, Missouri to get his horse shod by his commander, Milton Burch. About an hour or two later, word was received at Buffalo that Levi was badly hurt when a bottle of gun powder was ignited in his right, front pants pocket causing a serious injury to his right thigh. Levi N. Scott had to be left in the hospital at Buffalo, Mo. while his regiment moved out, but eventually rejoined his company at Ozark, Missouri after his wound healed.

The remainder of Levi's service went without any additional serious injuries and he was transferred to the 8th Missouri State Militia Cavalry following the disbanding of the 14th MSM Cavalry. Levi served honorably throughout the entire Civil War and was eventually discharged on April 18th, 1865 at Springfield, Missouri.

Levi remarried to his second wife, Mary Catherine Hoover, on February 21, 1869. To this union, Levi and Mary were blessed with two children, James Franklin - born in 1870 and Cora Elizabeth - born on April 29, 1878.

Levi married one last time to his third wife, Callie Russell, widow of William J. Engle, on November 28, 1907.

It was on July 28, 1915 at age 73 when Levi Newton Scott would finally meet his maker.
