Private Joseph C. Powell was born in 1839 to Elias and Lettia ( Bearden ) Powell in the State of Missouri.
On October 21, 1858, Joseph married Phoebe L. O’Bannon in Dallas County, Missouri. To this union, two son’s were born, John Elias on July 22, 1859 and George F. On March 3, 1862.
Private Powell served honorably throughout his term of service for the 14th Missouri State Militia Cavalry.
In these days, camp diseases were running rampant throughout the troops claiming about two thirds of the casualty deaths on both sides of this war. Private Powell was no exception when he fell victim to the many Camp illness and succumbed to Typhoid. Joseph met his maker on the 21st of February, 1863 at Linden, Christian County, Missouri. He leaves behind his wife Phoebe and his two children, John and George.
